With its sprawling park and a plethora of recreational activities, this charming community beckons residents and visitors alike. So, let's delve into the intriguing past of Washington Park and explore the multitude of attractions, delightful dining spots, and endless possibilities that make this neighborhood truly special.

A Glimpse into the Past

Dating back to the late 1800s, Washington Park boasts a rich history that has shaped its character. Initially envisioned as a suburban oasis, the neighborhood flourished alongside the development of its beloved namesake park. Designed by renowned landscape architect Reinhard Schuetze, this urban sanctuary spans over 165 acres of enchanting greenery, serene lakes, and vibrant flower gardens. The park's creation set the stage for the neighborhood's growth and transformation, blending historical charm with contemporary allure.

Recreation and Outdoor Activities

One of the main attractions of Wash Park is its breathtaking urban park. The park offers an array of recreational opportunities to suit every taste. Whether you prefer a stroll, an invigorating jog, or a bike ride, you'll find an extensive network of paths and trails to explore. The streets have been painted with directional signage to help manage the various types of traffic flow.  In the summer months, you’ll see everything from picnics and festivals to volleyball and basketball matches.

Water enthusiasts will be delighted by the park's two picturesque lakes, Smith Lake and Grasmere Lake. When the weather warms up you can rent a paddleboat or canoe to glide across the tranquil waters, soaking in the serene ambiance and picturesque vistas. Sports enthusiasts will find their haven at the tennis courts, lawn bowling greens, and the recreational center featuring a swimming pool. Washington Park truly caters to active individuals and families, providing ample opportunities for exercise and leisure.

Culinary Delights and Shopping

Washington Park offers a delectable array of dining options to satisfy all palates. Embrace the neighborhood's culinary scene by stopping just four blocks from the park at the South Gaylord Street shopping area.  There you can grab a quick snack or coffee at Devil's Food Bakery, renowned for its mouthwatering pastries. For a more complete breakfast, the nearby restaurant The Cookery at Myrtle Hill has a great selection of delightful breakfast dishes, don’t miss the side of bruleed grapefruit.  When it's time for lunch or dinner, explore the options along South Gaylord Street where neighborhood favorites like Perdida, Homegrown Tap an Dough, and Reivers await.

Washington Park's appeal extends beyond its culinary delights, there are a variety of boutiques, art galleries, and specialty stores waiting to be discovered. With close proximity to Bonnie Brae and Cherry Creek North, a short bike ride or drive will take you to many more shopping and dining adventures.

Wash Park holds a special place in our family’s hearts. My husband spent his entire childhood growing up across from the park on South Washington Street.  He has such fond memories as a child roaming around with his friends, fishing for crawfish in the creek and just being kids.  When we moved from California back to Denver in 2014, our first home was in nearby Bonnie Brae.  We spent many summer nights walking and riding bikes to Wash park and beyond with our two dogs and friends.  It has changed so much over the years and still remains a really special place in the Denver area to go experience if you haven’t already.
